Season Update: Etching the Floor

Today (Monday, September 28) the curling floor area was cleaned and then etched in preparation for painting white on Tuesday night. This will eliminate the need to lay down white paper and reduce the ice thickness by about 3/4". Ultimately, thinner ice will reduce energy costs. Special thanks to Rich, Ron, Lon and Chris.

Local Curlers Develop Brush Accessory

Several years ago, ECCC curler Bob Scott realized that many curlers could use additional stability during delivery. He teamed up, off the ice, with another ECCC curler, Jim Beirne. Together they designed a broom attachment for curlers to use during delivery. After developing a number of prototype models, they settled on a winning style and began manufacturing this device in Bob's workshop. The Curling Brush Buddy or "CUBB" was designed to assist the curler during the delivery of a stone and then simply fold to the storage position on the brush so the curler could still sweep when necessary.
Bob Scott set up his milling machine to produce parts for the CUBB.
Bob reflects that "Use of the CUBB squares the shoulders to the target, reduces balance problems, and allows the curler to concentrate on the release of the stone."

Bob has other inventions including a special slider. He uses a custom mold sandwiched with a plastic that withstands the cold and flexing of the curling shoe. The "sandwich" is heated and pressure is applied until the small "bumps" are transferred to the plastic. With the slider attached to the shoe, the curler will glide on only the bumps -- it works similarly to "pebbling" the ice.

Circles and Logo - Stage 3

Circles and logo are installed...
After two floods to seal in the white paper the circles are placed. Small sections of colored crepe paper are layed on the ice and carefully "frozen" onto the surface. The lines are installed in a similar way.
